FRISCO, Texas – After helping guide the defending Southland Conference Champion Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team to their fourth and fifth straight wins without dropping a set during the week's two matches, Kailin Newsome earned her second Southland Conference Player of the Week award of 2023 it was announced on Monday.
 
Newsome, a senior outside hitter from Houston, Texas, averaged 5.25 points per set in Southeastern's sweeps over Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. During those six sets, she averaged 4.83 kills per set and had a .225 attack percentage while adding a pair of assists and a pair of blocks.
 
In Thursday's win over the Cardinals, Newsome averaged 6.3 kills per set to finish the match with 19 kills and hit for a season-best .424 attack percentage as she had five errors on 33 total attacks in that match. She followed that up with her eighth double-double of the season in the three-set win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, finishing the match against the Islanders with 10 kills and 11 digs.
 
While being the second weekly award for Newsome, this is also her eighth career SLC Player of the Week award. This is also the fourth SLC volleyball weekly award taken by a Lady Lion this season with Rachel Hartmann having also earned an Offensive Player of the Week award and Jacqueline Arrington being named Defensive Player of the Week to go with Newsome's two Offensive awards.
 
Newsome and the rest of the Lady Lions (11-4, 2-1 SLC) return home for the first time in a month for their Southland Conference home opener on Tuesday night when New Orleans comes to Hammond, America. Opening serve of Tuesday's match against the Privateers (2-11, 0-2 SLC) is set for 6:30 p.m. in the Pride Roofing University Center. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ with a radio broadcast also available in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area on KSLU 90.9 FM or worldwide at LionSports.net/ListenLive.
