HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University football team continued its preparations for the 2023 football season with its eighth workout of fall camp Thursday at Strawberry Stadium.
 
Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo has been pleased with his team's progress after putting the pads on for the first time Monday.
 
"We were able to get some good situational work in today," Scelfo commented. "We executed well on both sides of the ball and we've been especially pleased with how our defense is coming along. We were really flying around out here today and playing with great energy."
 
Scelfo and his staff believe they can start to see some of the program's offseason efforts net positive results.
 
"We put so much work in this summer that we're not having to make a lot of corrections," Scelfo said. "Our guys are working hard and doing the right things without having to continuously tell them. This group has been very coachable and we're really pleased with their willingness to do the right things."
 
Scelfo has also been impressed with the leadership of the Lion veterans throughout the team.
 
"It's not just one or two guys who are stepping up as leaders," Scelfo stated. "We have different people in every position group. We're seeing our players who've been part of our program not only make themselves better, but helping those around them be better as well, which is a sign of great leadership."
 
SLU will return to the practice field Friday for a 9 a.m. workout.
 
Southeastern opens the 2023 season with three straight nonconference road contests, beginning with a Sept. 2 trip to Mississippi State. The game versus the Bulldogs kicks off at 3 p.m. in Starkville, Mississippi and will be televised on SEC Network and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM, The Boss 103.7 FM/WFPR 1400 AM).

Hosted by Scelfo and Allen Waddell, the hour-long radio show will air Monday throughout the football season on Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/WFPR 1400 AM.
