Reigning Southland Champion Southeastern Places League-High 17 on Preseason All-SLC Teams

Eight offensive, six defensive and three special teams players represent SLU among league's best heading into 2023

HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University football team placed a league-high 17 student-athletes on the preseason All-SLC Football teams released Friday by the conference office.

Southeastern had representatives selected in all three phases, led by the Lions taking both quarterback spots on the preseason All-SLC squad. Junior Zachary Clement, who was a second team all-conference pick at Northwestern State last fall, was a first team selection, while Eli Sawyer was the second team choice.

Clement led a quartet of first team preseason All-Southland Conference selections on offense for the Lions. Joining Clement was the offensive line trio of preseason All-American and reigning SLC Offensive Lineman of the Year John Allen and fellow offensive linemen Jhy Orgeron and Jalen Bell.

Senior defensive end Arlen Williams and junior linebacker Donte' Daniels were both first team all-league choices on the defensive side of the ball. Southeastern saw two special teams standouts – senior punter Austin Dunlap and junior punt returner Darius Lewis – also earn first team notice.

Sawyer was joined on the second team offense by three teammates - sophomore running back Rodeo Graham Jr., junior tight end Ivan Drobocky and junior offensive lineman Brockim Wicks. The senior quartet of defensive end Garrett Crawford, linebacker Herman Christophe IV, linebacker Anthony Britton Jr. and defensive back Tyrone Legette were all second team selections for SLU, as was sophomore kicker Riley Callaghan.

Returning 2022 All-Southland Conference first and second team selections were automatically named to the 2023 preseason All-SLC teams. Open spots were voted on by the Southland head coaches and media relations directors.

Allen, Williams and head coach Frank Scelfo will represent Southeastern at Southland Conference Football Media Day Monday. The Lion segment will air at 10:45 a.m. on ESPN+.

The Lions report to campus Aug. 1 with fall practice officially opening Aug. 2. Southeastern opens the 2023 season with three straight nonconference road contests, beginning with a Sept. 2 trip to Mississippi State. The game versus the Bulldogs kicks off at 3 p.m. in Starkville, Mississippi and will be televised on SEC Network and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM, The Boss 103.7 FM/WFPR 1400 AM).

Scelfo, the reigning and two-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year, will be at all remaining stops on the 2023-24 LAA Coaches Caravan. The caravan moves on to Greystone Golf & Country Club (9461 St. Andrews Court) in Denham Springs Thursday. The final stop sees the Lions return to Hammond, America July 31 at Gnarly Barley Brewing (1709 Corbin Rd.).
