UNO Wins Series Finale Against Lions

NEW ORLEANS, La. – New Orleans finished off the Pontchartrain Bowl series with a 3-2 win Saturday over the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team in Southland Conference action at Maestri Field.

Southeastern (16-16, 3-6 SLC) came out swinging against UNO (19-13, 5-4 SLC) pitching.

Tyler Finke and Shea Thomas ripped back-to-back doubles to open up the game, putting the Lions on top. Jake Killingsworth followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. Thomas was thrown out at the plate, attempting to score on a fly ball to right.

The Privateers tied it up in the bottom of the inning with a pair of singles, sandwiched around a groundout, led to a run off SLU starting pitcher Andrew Landry.

Both starting pitchers settled in, holding down the bats until the sixth. UNO starting pitcher Brandon Mitchell retired 14 consecutive batters after a leadoff hit by Dane Watts in the second. Landry retired eight straight following a one-out walk in the third.

Southeastern regained the lead in the sixth. Mitchell hit Connor Manola with a two-out pitch and then walked Champ Artigues. Rhett Rosevear singled up the middle to score Manola.

The Privateers took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Landry issued a one-out walk, putting the tying run aboard. A two-out single followed by a two-run triple put UNO on top for the first time in the game.

SLU put the leadoff hitter aboard in the both the seventh and eighth, and had a pair aboard with one out in the ninth, but was unable to plate the tying run.

Mitchell (6-2) earned the win, allowing two runs in seven innings pitched. He scattered seven hits and one walk, striking out six. Privateers' reliever Colton Mercer earned his first save of the season, closing out the game with a pair of scoreless innings.

Landry (2-5) suffered the loss, allowing three runs in seven innings of work. He surrendered six hits and walked three batters, striking out three.
