Lions Announce First Wave of 2023 Signing Class

SLU head men's basketball coach David Kiefer has added three signees to the 2023-24 roster

SLU Announces Additions of Burton, Mpoyo, Commisso for 2023-24 Season

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team announced its first three signings to its 2023 incoming class as head coach David Kiefer received the signatures of one junior college transfer and two true freshmen.

Back in the fall during the early signing period, Southeastern received the signature of Kam Burton. Burton, a 6-3 shooting guard, comes to Hammond from Legacy the School for Sports Sciences in Spring, Texas where he played under coach P.J. Couisnard, who turned Legacy into a nationally-recognized name for high school basketball. He left the Titans as the school's all-time leader in three-point makes in school history while helping lead the squad to CIBA and SWAIC National Championships. He was ranked as a top-15 player in the greater Houston area and a top-50 player throughout the state of Texas.

"After signing with us in the fall during the early signing period, Kame went on to have a very good season at Legacy," said Kiefer. "With so many prospects coming out of Texas, to be ranked in the top-50 is phenomenal. He is extremely strong and has great size for the wing position that reminds me a lot of Roger McFarlane and Alec Woodard. You can tell that he was coached the right way, especially at Legacy, by how he plays at his own pace."

To open the spring signing period, the Lions received the signatures of Joe Mpoyo and Dominic Commisso.

Mpoyo, a 6-4 shooting guard from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, makes his way to SLU from Dawson Community College in Glendive, Montana. In his sophomore season, he helped guide the Buccaneers to a 24-8 record and a trip to the Region XIII Championship Game while earning a NJCAA All-American honor while being named First Team All-Mon-Dak Athletic Conference. He averaged 16 points per game, which led the team, on 41.4% shooting, 33.5% from three, and 79.5% from the free throw line. He prepped at Meridian High School in Idaho where he was teammates with fellow Lion Brody Rowbury.

"We are really excited about Joe joining the program," continued Kiefer. "His journey has been unique as he originally comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and then from Idaho to Montana to now coming to Hammond, America. His size, athleticism, and ability to make shots are what initially caught my eye, but his maturity and basketball IQ are what separated him from other prospects."

Commisso, a 6-9 forward from Chicago, Illinois, joins the Lions after a spending a post-graduate season at The Newman School in Boston under head coach Jackson Johnson, a recognized up-and-coming coach in New England. He averaged 10 points and six rebounds a game while scoring on 70% of his shot attempts during The Newman School's inaugural season of basketball. He spent his main high school years at Hononegah High in Rockford, Illinois where he helped win a regional championship while earning all-star honors. His AAU team also won a Hoop Group Championship and a NY2LA Championship.

"Dom's length and athleticism are rare for an incoming freshman. At 6-9 with a 7-0 wingspan, he is extremely versatile, especially on the defensive end. Also, after spending the last year competing in the NEPSAC, he is already battle tested against some of the best high school players in the nation. Dom's potential is something that we are excited about because with his work ethic, we know he will reach it."

All three are eligible to join the Lions immediately.
