JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team left little doubt Saturday on its way to a 15-2 win in game two of the series against Jacksonville at John Sessions Stadium.
With the win over the Dolphins (7-5), Southeastern (8-3) snapped a three-game skid.
The Lions set the tone right out of the gate as
Rhett Rosevear ripped a single to right field on the first pitch of the game from Jacksonville starting pitcher Christian Graham. SLU would strand Rosevear
For the second time in as many games, the Dolphins struck first. A leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning, followed by a walk, put a pair of runners on in front of Hogan McIntosh. The cleanup hitter dropped an RBI triple in down the right-field line, staking Jacksonville to a 1-0 lead.
Christian Garcia quickly tied the game up in the second, launching a solo home run with one out. The blast was his second of the season, tying him for the team lead.
Jacksonville regains the lead with a two-out walk and RBI double in the second.
The Lions answered again, taking the lead in the third with a pair of runs. Jacksonville starting pitcher Christian Graham hit
Joe Delaney with a 3-1 pitch to open up the inning. After Delaney stole second base, he scored on a one-out RBI single to right by
Champ Artigues.
Jake Killingsworth drove in Artigues with a two-out RBI double to right-center field.
Another two-out RBI extended the Lions' lead in the fifth. Artigues draws a one-out walk and then Graham hits
Tyler Finke with a pitch.
Shea Thomas plated Artigues with a two-out RBI single up the middle.
The Dolphins threatened in the bottom of the inning, putting a pair on with one out but SLU starting pitcher
Will Kinzeler picked a runner off second base before getting a fielder's choice grounder to end the inning.
Southeastern broke the game open in the sixth.
Bryce Grizzaffi led off the inning with an infield hit. He would advance to second on an errant pickoff throw by Graham before
TJ Salvaggio was hit by a pitch. After
Joe Delaney sacrificed both runners into scoring position, Jacksonville brought in reliever Tommy Allman.
Rhett Rosevear greeted Allman with a two-run single up the middle, taking an extra bag on the throw. Artigues followed with an RBI triple down the first-base line. He would score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Finke to give the SLU an 8-2 lead.
The Lions continued to pour it on in the seventh. Thomas greeted reliever Scout Updike with a double to center. Updike hit
Christian Garcia with a pitch before issuing a walk to Grizzaffi to load the bases. Thomas scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Salvaggio. Garcia would also score on the play after a relay throw to first hit Grizzaffi and rolled away.
Up 11-2 heading into the eighth, Southeastern adds four more runs with the highlight being a two-run homer by
Joe Delaney. It was the first home run of his career for the junior out of Destrehan, Louisiana.
Kinzeler (3-0) earned the win, allowing two runs in six innings pitched. The junior right-hander from Covington, Louisiana scattered five hits and three walks, striking out five.
Trey Harrington (1.0 IP) and
Jack Walker (2.0 IP) both turned in scoreless outings in relief for the Lions.
Graham (1-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs – all earned – in 5.1 innings of work. He surrendered six hits and two walks, hitting three batters and throwing a wild pitch. Graham struck out six.
Artigues (2-for-4), Garcia (2-for-4), Rosevear (2-for-5) and Thomas (2-for3) each turned in multi-hit performances at the plate. Artigues, Delaney and Garcia scored three runs apiece.
Salvaggio drove in a game-high four runs while Artigues, Delaney, Finke and Rosevear contributed two RBIs each.
