Southeastern Sweeps TAMU-CC

Alexius Horne puts up 24 points in Southland Conference match up at home in the University Center in huge 59-51 victory over the Islanders

HAMMOND, La.  – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at home in the University Center Saturday afternoon at 1:30, 59-51.

Southeastern (13-8, 8-3 Southland) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (14-8, 9-2 SLC) met for the second time this season as SLU handed the Islanders their second loss of the season, sweeping both regular season games between the two Southland opponents. Southeastern previously beat Texas A&M-CC 53-46 back on Thursday January 12 in Corpus Christi, Texas which would be its only loss until this afternoon.

Alexius Horne was in the zone against TAMU-CC as she put up 24 points in the University Center, only four points away from her career high 28 points when the Lady Lions played LSU earlier this season, she also had three assists. Chrissy Brown had 10 rebounds and Natalie Kelly had five blocks.

Paige Allen would lead the Islanders with 12 points and seven rebounds while Makinna Serrata would lead with four assists.

The Lady Lions were able to put up a fight during the first quarter while Cunningham put up points in the first few minutes of the game. SLU shot 40 percent from the floor and were 1-of-2 for three pointers. Jen Pierre was on top of her game as she put up several jumpers and a free throw to help Southeastern tie the game 6-6 before the quarter ended.

The second quarter was a back-to-back scoring matching for Horne as she put up a midrange jump-shot and a three pointer within minutes of each other. The Islanders would outshoot Southeastern by 33 percent from the floor. Both teams would be 2-of-4 for three pointers before Cunningham would put up a buzzer beater with two seconds left as SLU trailed, 29-25 before halftime.

The third quarter would be a close one as Southeastern only out-scored Texas A&M-CC by four points, going 7-of-16 compared to TAMU-CC's 5-of-16. SLU would out shoot three pointers as it would have a 67 three-point shooting percentage, with the Islanders' going 0-of-4.

The fourth quarter was sealed for the Lady Lions after multiple turnovers by TAMU-CC that resulted in a steal by Horne and a layup by Chrissy Brown, upping the score 50-46. Allen would close the gap with a three-pointer with 3:13 left in the game. After some fouls caused by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and successful free throws by Hailey Giaratano, the score would be finalized with a 59-51 win for the Lady Lions.
