SLU Can Secure #3 Seed in Tournament with Win

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team looks to lock down the #3 seed in the upcoming Jersey Mike's 2023 Southland Conference Championships presented by LouisianaTravel.com when it heads to Houston to wrap up the regular season on Wednesday against the Houston Christian Huskies.

Southeastern (17-13, 11-6 SLC) looks to end the regular season on a four-game win streak with a positive result Wednesday night which would tie the longest winning streak of the season. A win over HCU on Wednesday also locks the Lions into the #3-seed in the Southland Conference Tournament, which starts on Sunday. No matter Wednesday's result, SLU opens play in the tournament on Monday evening.

In SLU's last contest, a 78-75 overtime win at home on Senior Day over McNeese State, Boogie Anderson tied two career highs and reset another as he helped the Lions overcome a 14-point second half deficit to force the extra five minutes. He took 18 total shots, a new career high, to score 24 points while grabbing seven rebounds, both tying career highs, in the win. In the overtime period against the Cowboys, Roscoe Eastmond scored seven of his 11 points in the game and nine of the team's points in the period as he hit both of his field goal attempts, one being a three-pointer, and both free throw attempts to guide the Lions to the win.

Nick Caldwell came off the bench in the game against McNeese to score 14 points and grab seven rebounds. Roger McFarlane hit a pair of three-pointers on his way to a 12-point, six-rebound, three-assist game on Saturday.

As he has all season, Anderson continues to lead the Lions in several statistical categories on the year. He leads SLU in scoring, averaging 14.1 points per game, assists, 4.3 per game, and steals, 1.2 per game. He hits on 49.3% of his shots on the season. McFarlane averages 12.2 points per game on 44.2% shooting, 40.7% from three, and leads Southeastern in rebounding at 8.1 per game. Caldwell puts in 11.1 points per game and grabs 5.2 rebounds per game while leading SLU in blocked shots, swatting 0.8 opposing shots per contest.

The Lions average 77.5 points per game as a team heading into the season finale, averaging 45.8% shooting from the field while hitting 36.5% from three. Southeastern's opponents average 76.2 points per game on 46.1% shooting and connect on 38.1% from above the arc on the year.

SLU is looking to complete a season sweep of the Huskies after the Lions knocked off HCU 71-59 in Hammond back on Jan. 5th.

HCU (10-20, 7-10 SLC) also clinched a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament on the strength of a two-game win streak, a streak which ended on Saturday at Nicholls State as the Huskies fell to the Colonels 68-64.

In the loss at Nicholls, Maks Klanscek led HCU with 25 points as he hit a total of seven shots from the field, five from above the three-point arc. He filled up the stat sheet with five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Brycen Long finished with 13 points as all four of his made shots came from above the arc while also grabbing four rebounds. Sam Hofman grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and blocked two Colonels shots.

Long leads the Huskies in scoring on the year, averaging 15.4 points per game on 44.2% of his shots and 42.3% from above the three-point arc. Klanjscek puts down 14.8 points per game on the year on 40.3% shooting. Both Long and Klanjscek lead HCU in steals by averaging 1.2 per contest. Bonke Maring scores 13.5 points per game on 59.8% shooting and leads the Huskies in rebounds with six boards per contest. Andrew King leads the team with 4.6 assists per game this season.

The Huskies average 78.3 points per game on 46% shooting, hitting 36.5% from above the arc as a team. HCU's opponents average 82.9 points per game on 49.6% shooting from the field and 36.1% from above the three-point arc.

Wednesday's game between the Lions and Huskies is set for 7:00 p.m. in Sharp Gymnasium and will be live streamed on ESPN+
