HAMMOND, La – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team will look to clinch a share of the Southland Conference championship during its final full week of the regular season.
The Lady Lions sit atop the conference standings and enter the week needing one win to secure a bye into the SLC Tournament semifinals as a top two seed and can clinch a share of its first-ever Southland championship with two victories. Thursday's 5 p.m. game at Lamar features the league's two hottest teams, as both enter on six-game winning streaks.
Southeastern will travel to Lamar (16-10, 10-5 SLC) Thursday at 5 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats can be accessed on www.LionSports.net
The Lady Lions enter Thursday's contest on a six-game win streak with their most recent win being against Texas A&M-Commerce, 66-55.
Hailey Giaratano and
Alexius Horne are both in the top 10 in the Southland Conference in scoring. Giaratano averaging 12.7 ppg and Horne putting up 12.6 ppg. Senior
Natalie Kelly is ranked third in the Southland in rebounding with 8.5 rpg and is still leading in in blocked shots with 2.4 blocks per game.
Chrissy Brown is also in the top 10 in rebounds averaging 7.3 rpg. Jen Pierre is in the top ten in assists in the conference with an average of 2.8 assists per game.
Lamar is currently in third place in conference standings and coming off of a six-game win streak, its most recent win being against HCU, 55-53, last Saturday. Sabria Dean leads the Cardinals in scoring with 13.8 ppg while Akasha Davis leads in rebounds with 7.6 rpg. Portia Adams leads in assists with 3.1 assists per game. The last time Southeastern played the Cardinals, SLU fell, 57-47, on Jan 7.
The Lady Lions will then come home and face off against McNeese (9-17, 6-9 SLC) Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the University Center. SLU welcomes McNeese Saturday at 1 p.m. in the 2022-23 home finale. The quartet of
Cierria Cunningham, Brown, Kelly and
Jaylen Huderson will be honored in a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
The Cowgirls are currently on a four-game losing streak with one of those losses being against Southeastern where McNeese dropped the game, 72-64, in overtime on Feb 9. The Cowgirls are currently ranked eighth in the conference.
Southeastern's final regular season contest will be at HCU Wednesday March 1 at 5 p.m. After that, they will be heading to the Southland Conference Tournament March 6-9 at the Legacy Center in Lake Charles, Lousiana.
