Lady Lions beat Texas A&M-Commerce for 6th Straight Win

Lady Lions still in the lead in the Southland Conference after adding another win on the road to their win streak

HAMMOND, La – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team sweeps Texas A&M-Commerce Lions on the road, 66-55.
 
The Lady Lions (17-8, 12-3 Southland) are on a hot streak that is keeping them at the front of the Southland Conference.
 
Southeastern still remains at the top of the pack in the Southland Conference with a 12-3 conference record and a season sweep of  TAMU-C. The Lady Lions have also punched their ticket to the 2023 Jersey Mike's Southland Basketball Championships presented by www.LouisianaTravel.com
 
Hailey Giaratano led the Lady Lions again with 15 points and three assists. Jen Pierre came in at a close second with 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Natalie Kelly led with seven rebounds and two steals.
 
Southeastern started out with a jump shot in the paint by Pierre to begin the first quarter. SLU would go on a six-point lead before TAMU-C's Zaria Collins put up a three pointer. The lead would go back and forth as Commerce would end the quarter leading the Lady Lions by one, 16-15. SLU would shoot 50 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the three.
 
Texas A&M-Commerce would take over and hold the lead for a portion of the second quarter until Daija Harvey put up a three pointer with less than three minutes left in the first have and from there Southeastern picked up speed and went on a six-point scoring run and would lead by eight points before the Lady Lions went into the locker room. SLU would go 6-of-14 from the floor, 40 percent from three and go 71 percent from the free throw line.
 
The third quarter opened up with Southeastern leading by seven after a good free throw by TAMU-C's Laila Lawrence. The Lady Lions would continue on the upward trend as Alexius Horne, Cierria Cunningham and Pierre would put up points getting SLU's lead up to ten with its largest lead after Dijone' Flowers free throw added to the lead. Commerce ended the quarter with a jumper by Mia Deck making the score, 48-39. The Lady Lions would put up their best shooting from the charity stripe with 75 percent.
 
Giaratano put up a three pointer with eight minutes left in the game while Southeastern would continue to hold a solid lead as Giaratano continued to sink baskets and would end the game on a free throw making the final score, 66-55.
 
Southeastern would score 20 points in the paint, 12 second chance points, six fast break points, 11 points off turnovers and 16 points from the bench.
 
 
The Lady lions will continue their last road trek of the regular season with a contest in Beaumont, Texas against Lamar Thursday February 23 at 5 p.m. before heading home to take on McNeese at home Saturday February 25 at 1 p.m. Thursday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ and Saturday's game can be viewed on ESPN3 at 1 p.m. Live stats can be accessed on www.LionSports.net
