Stuprich Dominates as SLU Wins Season Opener

Story Links

HAMMOND, La. – Brennan Stuprich struck out a career-high 10 batters and the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team took advantage of numerous free passes Friday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field on its way to a 15-4 win over Lafayette College in the season opener for both ball clubs.

The redshirt sophomore took the mound for the first time in a regular-season game in more than a year and looked to be in mid-season form. He scattered four hits over six shutout innings against the Leopards (0-1) and did not walk a batter on the way to earning the win for Southeastern (1-0).

Lafayette pitchers walked 13 batters and hit another seven, helping jumpstart the Lion offense.

SLU provided plenty of offensive support, scoring three runs each in the second, third and fourth innings. A run single run in the sixth and five runs in the eighth rounded out the run production.

A one-out walk to Champ Artigues in the second inning preceded a triple down the right-field line by sophomore shortstop TJ Salvaggio, putting the Lions on the board. After Joe Delaney drew a walk, Rhett Rosevear was hit by a pitch for the first of two times in the game to load the bases.

Following a fielder's choice, Shea Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run and designated hitter Jake Killingsworth was hit by a pitch to plate another. From that point forward, Southeastern never looked back.

Artigues was 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Tyler Finke was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Salvaggio was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Delaney scored four runs, drawing three walks and being hit by a pitch once. Rosevear also drew walks in addition to his pair of HBPs.

Christian Garcia drove in a pair with an eight-inning double. Thomas (2), Rosevear, Ethan Moore, Killingsworth and Connor Manola also drove in runs for Southeastern.

UP NEXT
The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader and fans can play baseball bingo at the ballpark. Lafayette is slated to start junior right-hander Adam Bogosian (0-0, 25.96 in 2022) in the opener and the Lions will counter with junior righty Will Kinzeler (4-2, 3.60 in 2022).
