HAMMOND, La. – Six Southeastern Louisiana University All-Southland Conference performers added to their trophy cases by earning spots on the 2023 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana college football team, which was released by the LSWA Saturday.
Representing the Lions on the first team was defensive back
Ian Conerly-Goodly. Second team SLU choices were offensive lineman
John Allen, defensive lineman
Arlen Williams, linebacker
Herman Christophe IV, punter
Austin Dunlap and return specialist
Darius Lewis. Southeastern's six All-Louisiana selections on the first and second teams were the third-highest among state schools behind Tulane (13) and LSU (10).
Conerly-Goodly adds a first team all-state nod to go with his first team All-SLC selection. The Covington, Louisiana native was second in the conference and 14
th in FCS with 109 tackles, as he finished with seven games of double-digit tackles.
Allen, who was named first team All-SLC for the second straight season last month, claimed his first All-Louisiana selection. The Jackson, Mississippi product started every game, splitting time between left guard and center for a Lion offense that averaged 25.3 points and 383.3 yards per contest.
Williams was among the state's best after earning first team All-Southland honors. The Boothville, Louisiana native was second in the league with six sacks to go with 40 tackles and eight tackles for loss.
Christophe IV was second on the team and seventh in the Southland with 85 tackles. The second team All-Southland pick from Plaquemine, Louisiana recorded a season-high 16 tackles and finished with double-digits stops versus Mississippi State, HCU and Tarleton State.
Dunlap, a four-time All-Southland selection, earned his first All-Louisiana nod. The Slidell, Louisiana native led the SLC and ranked seventh in FCS with a 43.9 punting average. The FCS Punter of the Year finalist was named Southland Special Teams Player of the Week three times and finished his final season ranked fifth nationally among active players in career punting average.
Lewis, a first team punt returner and second team wide receiver on last month's All-SLC team, was honored for his return skills. The New Orleans, Louisiana native led the conference and ranked ninth on the FCS leaderboard with a 13.8 punt return average.
LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels was named Offensive Player of the Year to go with his Heisman Trophy victory. Tulane's Patrick Jenkins (Defensive Player of the Year), Makhi Hughes (Freshman of the Year) and Willie Fritz (Coach of the Year) earned three of the state's individual honors. Nicholls quarterback Pat McQuaide was named Newcomer of the Year.
The team was voted on by an LSWA panel of football media along with the sports communications/media relations staff members of the state colleges and universities. The nominations were submitted by each school and the only voting restriction was that the football communications staff member voting could not votes for their school's nominees.
Southeastern's spring practice will run Feb. 19 through March 23. The Lions open the 2024 season at Tulane Aug. 31.
