Southeastern Adds 23 for 2024

SLU welcomes new playmakers on both sides of the ball

HAMMOND, La. – A total of 23 student-athletes have made the decision to continue their academic and athletic endeavors as members of the Southeastern Louisiana University football program, SLU head coach Frank Scelfo announced on National Signing Day Wednesday.

Scelfo and his Lion staff made improvements on both sides of the ball. The new class includes 15 defensive players and eight additions on offense.

"We're very excited about this signing class," Scelfo commented. "We're pleased with the diversity of the positions we were able to address. This class also features a lot of excellent students. We wanted to increase the intelligence of our team on the field and we were able to do that across the board.

"We're always looking to increase our team speed," Scelfo continued. "We addressed that with our additions at the receiver position and in the secondary. With a couple of exceptions, we didn't have many dynamic playmakers who were threats to score every time they touched the ball and we added some guys today who can fill that need moving forward."

Throughout his time with the Lions, Scelfo has preached the importance of recruiting the state of Louisiana first. A total of 15 of Wednesday's signees hail from the Pelican State.

"Our best players each year are coming from a close proximity to our campus," Scelfo said. "We have so many good players in this area and we have great relationships with the high schools that are allowing us to add some great talent to our program."

A group of 10 new signees will be on campus for the start of spring practice and get a jump on preparations for the 2024 season, as defensive end Evan Aubrey, defensive end Lamar Brown, running back Taboris (TJ) Charles, cornerback Levi Darensbourg, defensive tackle Louis Gendron, offensive lineman Zane Hooper, wide receiver D'Khai Joseph, quarterback Tanner Murray, linebacker Joe Sniffin and defensive back BJ Wagner will all be enrolled for the spring semester.

Southeastern will open spring practice Feb. 19, which runs through March 23. The Lions open the 2024 season at Tulane Aug. 31.
