Box Score Lawrence, Kan. – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 67-56 in a hard-fought road test Thursday afternoon to close-out its two-game road stretch in the historic Allen Fieldhouse.
Southeastern (4-4) had a solid start to the contest going on a 9-0 run over Kansas (3-3) to end the first quarter with a 15-14 advantage. The Lady Lions finished the first half with 26 points led by fifth-year senior
Hailey Giaratano.
The veteran finished the afternoon with yet another game in double-digit scoring to lead the team with 16 points. The Lady Lions remained determined to chip away at Kansas's lead. The Jayhawks had no answer for Giaratano's jumper, shooting 53.3 percent from the field.
The Jayhawks went on a 10-point run late into the second quarter to give Kansas some momentum. Fifth-year senior Taiyanna Jackson played to her All-American status to finish the contest with a double-double consisting of 22 points and 13 rebounds. S'Mya Nichols and Zakiyah Franklin also ended the game in double-digit scoring for the Jayhawks.
SLU came out with energy in the third quarter due to a momentum shifting three-pointer by
Allasia Washington who earned 11 points, her third consecutive game in double-digits. Although Kansas capitalized off second chance opportunities converted to easy points at the free-throw line to extend its lead.
Southeastern finished the game on top in paint points with a 32-24 advantage over the Jayhawks along with points from the bench. SLU's reserves put together 27 points over Kansas who produced eight.
Taylor Bell contributed six rebounds to lead the team along with
Jalencia Pierre who had a break-out game with 15 points. Pierre shot 50.0 percent from beyond the arch and 100.0 percent from the free-throw line.
The Lady Lions will return to play Friday at home in the Pride Roofing University Center to matchup against the South Alabama Jaguars Dec. 15.
