Gr. G Avery Wilson set a new season high in scoring Tuesday vs. SUNO
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team kicks off a four-game road stand, the back half of a nine game out of 10 stretch away from home, on Friday in Baton Rouge by taking on LSU at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
The game between the Lions (2-5) and Tigers (4-3) will tip off at 7:00 p.m. and it will be live streamed on SEC Network+. The game can also be heard on 90.9 FM The Lion in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area and worldwide on LionSports.net/ListenLive or LionUpRadio.org. Fans can also find the radio call on a smart device through the Lions Gameday Experience app, the TuneIn Radio app, or the MyTuner Radio app. Live stats will also be available through the host institution.
Southeastern cracked the win column for the first time in six games by cracking the century-mark for the first time in nearly a full calendar year in Tuesday's 101-55 win over Southern University New Orleans. It was the first time the Lions got 100 points or more since a 107-71 win over Belhaven on Dec. 7, 2022.
Nick Caldwell enters Friday's game sitting on exactly 1,000 career points as the 23 points he scored in Tuesday's win over the Knights got him to the milestone. Meanwhile, another milestone closes in for the fifth-year senior as he's played in 129 career games, sitting just three appearances from tying the SLU career record for games played. His explosion against SUNO has him averaging 11.4 points per game on the season while connecting on 53.4% of his shots, including 38.5% from above the three-point arc
Kam Burton is coming off of his best game as a Lion as he let it fly against the Knights. The true freshman scored 19 points while picking up season highs in scoring, made shots, made three-point shots, and rebounds.
Avery Wilson also used the game against SUNO to get into a rhythm as he continues to get his feet fully under him following three seasons worth of injuries. He had 16 points in the win over SUNO, which was a new season and career high for him, making seven field goal attempts in Tuesday's game.
Roger McFarlane, SLU's top scorer and rebounder, finished the game against SUNO with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. He's now averaging 15 points and six boards a game and hits 42.2% from the field, including 38.2% from deep.
Accepting the change from sixth-man to starter,
Alec Woodard sits at 9.1 points per game, hitting 51% from the field and 40% from distance.
Roscoe Eastmond hit three quick three-pointers on Tuesday night to get to nine points, but is still the team's top distributor with a team-high average of 4.6 assists per game while scoring 7.4 points per contest.
On the year, Southeastern averages 73.9 points per game following the offensive explosion on Tuesday. SLU now hits on 43.9% of its shots overall and 35% from three on the year.
LSU enters the game looking to rebound after the Tigers saw their three-game win streak snapped on Thursday in an 80-57 loss at Syracuse as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge. Jordan Wright led all scorers for the Tigers with 15 points in the loss to the Orange.
Jalen Reed picked up a double-double on the evening as he scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss to Syracuse. Those numbers against the Orange moved him to 9.2 points and 5.3 rebounds a game while hitting 51.5% from the field.
LSU will be looking to improve its shooting after hitting 39.3% against Syracuse on Tuesday, but especially from distance as the Tigers hit just two of their 22 attempts from above the three-point arc against the Orange.
Will Baker, who was held to just three points against Syracuse, remains LSU's top scorer on the year, averaging 14.4 points and 5.6 rebounds a game while hitting 54.4% of his shots and 41.7% from three.
Wright is the only other double-figure scorer for the Tigers on the year, currently averaging 12 points per and 5.4 rebounds per game on 33.3% shooting and 28.1% from deep.
After having just ended a five-game road trip with Tuesday's home game, this game against LSU is the first of four-straight on the road again for the Lions, though three games in the stretch remain inside the borders of the state of Louisiana. The road trip will feature another trip to the Capital City for a game against Southern and a trip to Ruston for a date with Louisiana Tech before a game in Kentucky against Murray State rounds out the trip while also being the final road game of the 2023 calendar year.
