Lions Wrap Up Season at Southland Championships

Women Finish 10th, Men Finish Ninth in Final Race of Cross Country Season

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University cross country teams wrapped up their 2023 season at the Southland Conference Championships on Friday at a rain-soaked Windcrest Golf Club where the women finished 10th and the men finished ninth.
 
Up first was the women's championship race on a six-kilometer course. With Nikola Vimmerová unable to go, it was Ava Pitarro who led the Lady Lions home as she finished in 46th place in a time of 24:46.5. Anthonate Barsai was the next Southeastern runner to come home, crossing the line in 26:15.3 for a 54th place finish. Shanique Masters, Alivia Buley, and Hannah Linebaugh all came home one behind the other in 60th, 61st, and 62nd, respectively. Jacqueline Thring rounded out the pack for SLU, coming home in 64th. At the end of the race, Southeastern had amassed 265 total points in the team competition.
 
The men's race followed on a course which ran eight-kilometers long. As he has all season, Euan Lagan was the first to cross the finish line for the Lions, coming home in 31st place in a time of 26:44.0. Noah Kiprotich was the next Southeastern runner to finish, stopping the clock at 28:45.9 in 53rd place. Landen Schillage was next in 64th place with Tim Anstett crossing soon after in 66th. Joel Boerkey and Courtlin Bauchand came home back-to-back in 69th and 70th, respectively. Darian Chestnut, Manny Portillo, and Triston Watford also finished one behind the other in 73rd, 74th, and 75th, respectively, to round out SLU's field. Southeastern finished with 260 points as a team.
 
With the cross country season now complete, attention turns to the start of the track & field season. The Lions open the indoor portion of the track & field schedule on Friday, January 12th in Baton Rouge at the LSU Purple Tiger meet. Field events start at 11:00 a.m. while track events start at 1:00 p.m. in the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.
