Lady Lions Fall to Lamar

Box Score

HAMMOND, LA.  – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team finished the weekend with a loss to Lamar University 57-47 Saturday afternoon in the University Center.

The Lady Lions had several leaders in stats with Chrissy Brown leading in rebounds with six total rebounds, Hailey Giaratano leading with 11 points and four steals. Jen Pierre led with two assists.

Southeastern (6-7, 2-1 SLC) didn't finish the weekend out as they had wanted as the Lamar Lady Cardinals took over the lead in the third quarter and held on until the end.

Pierre started out in a flash with a driving layup in the first few seconds of the first quarter, giving SLU a 2-0 lead with 9:49 left in the first quarter. It would be a back and forth as Southeastern had multiple missed shots with a jumper and three pointer both missed by Alexuis Horne and Cierra Cunningham. Neither team would be slow in scoring until Cunningham and Taylor Bell would put up points making the score 6-5 at the 3:54 mark. Brown would end the scoring for Southeastern in the first quarter with a layup at the 1:02 point.

Giaratano opened up the second quarter with a good jumper, upping the score 15-12 and giving the Lady Lions a three-point lead early in the second quarter. Lamar's Akasha Davis would answer with a lay up at 8:21. Southeastern would get the ball back after a turnover by LU's Sabria Dean that would continue into two more turnovers, one by SLU and the other by Lamar. At 3:45, Horne hit a turn around shot, sinking another basket in for the Lady Lions, 21-14 Southeastern.  The first half would end with a fading jump shot by Cierra Cunningham as time expired.

Not even a full minute passed before Davis put up another jump shot that would be answered by Lamar's Malay McQueen's three pointer at 9:16. From that point on, Southeastern would struggle to maintain a lead as Lamar would outscore the Lady Lions 18-11.

Southeastern started the fourth quarter in a two-point deficit 36-34. Bell quickly tied with a driving layup at 9:18 and the ball would change hands multiple times as both teams continued to smother and box each other out. As the time drained from the clock, Lamar drained four three-pointers. Southeastern fought back from a 13-point deficit to a seven-point lead for the Lady Cardinals and it looked hopeful as there multiple well-placed fouls and timeouts but with four missed three pointers for Southeastern in the last minute and nine seconds, Lamar would seal with deal with a ten-point lead and 57-47 win over the Lady Lions.

Southeastern will hit the road for more conference play against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Thursday January 12th at 5 p.m. at Corpus Christi and UIW in San Antonio Texas Saturday at 2:00.  Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
