SLU Hosts Northwestern State, Texas A&M-Commerce on Court This Week

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team comes back home after a successful trip to Texas for the first two games of a three-game home stand, starting this Thursday against Northwestern State and ending the week on Saturday against Texas A&M-Commerce.

Southeastern (10-8, 4-1 SLC) did a Texas two-step last week, knocking off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in overtime and Incarnate Word to extend SLU's longest winning streak of the season out to four-game as the Lions come home for a pair of games this week.

Leading the way in the win over the Cardinals on Saturday was Boogie Anderson, who finished with team highs in points, 19, assists, five, and steals, three, while also grabbing five rebounds in the win. Roger McFarlane had his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Alec Woodard continued his run of efficient games, needing just four shots to score 10 points while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists, all of which was needed to help the shorthanded Lions who were down two starters and only used three reserves off the bench against UIW.

Anderson continues to lead a balanced Southeastern scoring attack, averaging 12.6 points per game. He also leads in the team in assists, 4.3 assists per game, and steals, 1.7 per game. While no other SLU players currently average 10 or more points per game, nine others who have played in at least 14 games this season are putting in at least five points per contest. McFarlane averages 9.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game

Southeastern scores 77 points per game on the year on 44.7% shooting while hitting 36.3% from above the three-point arc. SLU gives up 76.2 points per game and allows opponents to hit on 45.7% of their shots, including 37% from three.

On Thursday, Northwestern State (10-8. 2-3 SLC) comes to Hammond trying to keep a losing streak from starting after the Demons dropped a 77-63 contest at Nicholls State on Saturday. In the loss to the Colonels, Ja'Monta Black led the way for NSU with 18 points. Isaac Haney added 11 points and eight rebounds while Jalen Hampton notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

DeMarcus Sharp leads the Demons this season, averaging 15.2 points per game. Black averaged 14.9 points and is NSU's top three-point threat, having hit 65 long distance shots this season or nearly four a game. Haney is the final double-figure scorer this season for Northwestern State, averaging 11.8 points per game.

The Demons score 71 points per game and have hit 40.9% of their shots this season, including 35.4% from above the arc. NSU's opponents average 72.9 points per game and hit 45.8% from the field and 32.6% from deep on the season.

Saturday's opponent, Texas A&M-Commerce (7-12, 3-2 SLC) enters this week's action looking for its first win streak since the Lions in blue won three straight to end the month of November. In their last game, an 81-66 home win over Lamar, Demarcus Demonia led four A&M-Commerce players in double-figures with 20 points. Jerome Brewer, Jr. and JJ Romer Rosario poured in 15 apiece while Kalen Williams filled up the box score with 14 points, six assists, and five rebounds.

Demonia leads TAMUC in scoring this season, hitting 47.9% of his shots on his way to 16.7 points per game while grabbing a team-high 5.2 rebounds per game. CJ Roberts averages 11.1 points per game, but has not played since the calendar flipped over to 2023. Williams is the next best scorer this season for the Commerce Lions, averaging 9.1 points.

Commerce scores 70 points per game on 44.1% shooting on the year and hit 30.4% from above the three-point arc. TAMUC's opponents score 72.1 points per game on 45.4% shooting and hit 34.5% from long range against them.

Tip-off of Thursday's game against Northwestern State is set for 7:30 P.M. and the first 300 students into the University Center for the women's/men's doubleheader will receive a free long-sleeve SLU t-shirt. Saturday's game against Texas A&M-Commerce is set for a 3:30 P.M. tip in the University Center. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
