HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team heads to Texas looking to extend the season's first win streak as the Lions take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Incarnate Word this week.
Southeastern (8-8, 2-1 SLC) is on its first two-game win streak of the season, taking both ends of the first full week of Southland Conference action this past week, knocking off Houston Christian and Lamar in the University Center. In the most recent game, Saturday's 89-84 overtime win over Lamar, the Lions got a balanced scoring attack to pull off the win with five players scoring 10 or more points.
Roger McFarlane and
Alec Woodard each scored 16 to lead the team in scoring against the Cardinals with McFarlane adding eight rebounds and five assists.
Roscoe Eastmond and
Nick Caldwell each added 15 points and
Brody Rowbury collected his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
That balanced attack continues to show in the overall season scoring stats as well with eight different Lions averaging at least six points per game this season and a ninth on the verge of joining that group.
Boogie Anderson, who scored 22 in Thursday's win against HCU, continues to lead the team in points per game average at 12.1 while shooting at 48.6% this season and leading the team in assists, 4.1 per game, and steals, 1.7 per game.
Christian Agnew is at 9.9 points per game. McFarlane, who is averaging 8.8 points per game, leads the Lions at 7.2 rebounds per game.
SLU averages 76.6 points per game and shoots 44.4% as a team, including 36.1% from three. Lions opponents score 76.2 points per game on 45.8% shooting, hitting 36.1% on three-point attempts.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (10-6, 3-0 SLC) enters the week as the lone team in the conference still without a loss in SLC play, currently riding a four-game win streak. Last week, they took both halves a home-and-home series with UIW, winning Wednesday's home game 91-61 before making the trip to San Antonio on Saturday and defeating the Cardinals 80-71. Terrion Murdix, a preseason All-Conference First Team member, led the Islanders in Saturday's road win with 21 points and eight assists. Ross Williams added 18 points while Jalen Jackson dropped in 14. Trevian Tennyson, another preseason All-Conference First Team player, finished with 13 points.
Isaac Mushila, another preseason All-Conference First Team member, leads the Islanders in both scoring and rebounding averages this season at 13.9 and 9.4, respectively. Murdix averages 12.2 points and leads the team averaging 4.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Tennyson averages 12.1 points per game and Williams sits at 11.1 points per game.
The Islanders, the preseason favorite in the SLC coaches' poll, average 79 points per game on 44.8% shooting and hit 33.5% from above the three-point arc. TAMUCC allows 71.5 points per game to their opponents on 44.7% shooting, including 32.7% from above the arc. Tip-off of Thursday's game in the American Bank Center is set for 7:30 P.M. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
Saturday, the Lions ride up to San Antonio to take on Incarnate Word. UIW (6-10, 0-3 SLC) is one two teams coming into this week's action still looking for their first conference win this season, Lamar being the other, while trying to end a four-game losing streak when they host New Orleans on Thursday night. In the aforementioned 80-71 home loss to TAMUCC, Luca Barei, who was making his season debut, came off the bench to lead the Cardinals in scoring with 15 points while also adding five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Trey Miller added 13 points while Brandon Swaby and Stephon Payne III each scored 12. Swaby added six rebounds and five assists, both team highs in the game, while Pryor added five boards and two steals. The Cardinals used just two players off the bench in Saturday's game.
Jonathan Cisse, who scored 22 points in Wednesday's game at A&M-Corpus Christi but missed Saturday's home game vs. the Islanders, is the leading scorer for the Cardinals at 13.8 points per game. He is the lone player who has played more than 10 games this season for UIW and is averaging double-digits in points.
The Cardinals score 69.1 points per game on the season while hitting 43.3% of their shots on the season while knocking down 33% of their shots from deep. UIW allows 73 points per game on the year as opposing teams hit 46.9% of their shots against Incarnate Word, including hitting 34.9% from above the arc. Saturday's game tips off at 4:00 P.M. inside the McDermott Center and will be live streamed on ESPN+.
