QUEENS, N.Y. – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team split a pair of nonconference decisions on the opening day of the Jack Kaiser Classic Friday at Carnesecca Arena.
The Lady Lions (7-2) opened the day with a hard-fought five-set loss to host St. John's (3-4). The Red Storm rallied past SLU for a 22-25, 28-30, 25-22, 25-23, 15-13 victory.
Southeastern bounced back with a 3-0 win over Stonehill College in the nightcap. The Lady Lions held SC to a .094 attack percentage on the way to a 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 triumph.
Addie Vidrine led SLU with eight kills, while
Crispin Adams added seven kills in the win over Stonehill.
Peyton Stokley paced the Lady Lions with 13 assists, while
Ansley Tullis recorded 14 digs in the nightcap effort.
St. John's was able to rally from two sets down in the first match of the day, despite a career-high-tying 26 kills by
Kailin Newsome, who posted a double-double with 14 digs.
Gracie Duplechein finished with 35 assists versus the Red Storm, while Tullis recorded 21 digs. Newsome was one of three Lady Lions with double-digit kills, along with
Cicily Hidalgo (16) and
Karlee Wilkerson (14). Wilkerson also led SLU with six blocks versus St. John's.
Southeastern will wrap up tournament play Saturday, facing Bryant at 10 a.m. (CST).
