Lady Lions Knock Off Defending SLC Champs on Road in Straight Sets

Second Set Rally Highlights SLU Win over TAMUCC

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team rallied back in a big way from its first Southland Conference defeat of the season, going to the defending conference champions in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and taking down the Islanders 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-18) Saturday afternoon at the Dugan Wellness Center.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair as neither team led by more than three points, the latest being a 15-12 Lady Lions. But it would come down to extra rallies and a kill by Peyton Stokley ended the set in SLU's favor.

SLU found itself on the bad end of set point in the second set as TAMUCC led 24-21, but the Lady Lions rallied as a kill by Crispin Adams started a five-point Lady Lions rally to come back and take the set as extra rallies ended on an Islander attack error.

The third was all Lady Lions almost from the start as SLU jumped out to an 8-2 lead following a block by Kibi Huggins and Crispin Adams. Kailin Newsome finished the match off with a kill on match point.

Cicily Hidalgo led the Lady Lion attack with 13 kills on 44 total attacks and had a .227 hitting percentage. She added a solo block and an assist as well. Kailin Newsome had nine kills and a service ace. Kibi Huggins added seven kills and three assisted blocks. Crispin Adams had six kills, a solo block, and an assisted block in the match. Gracie Duplechein was credited with 20 assists while Peyton Stokley had 11. Hannah Brewer was big at the net with two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Ansley Tullis led the team with 14 digs while Newsome dug out 11 attacks.

The Lady Lions (12-3, 2-1 SLC) return home for a midweek match against McNeese State. Opening serve against the Cowgirls (5-11, 1-1 SLC) is set for 6:30 P.M. at the University Center.
