Newsome Hits Way to Season’s Second Player of the Week Award

Averaged 15 Kills per Match in Three Match at Battle of the Boot Tournament

FRISCO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team made it four conference weekly awards in four weeks as Kailin Newsome earned her second Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week award, the conference office announced on Monday.
 
Newsome, a junior outside hitter from Houston, Texas, picked up the award for her play in three matches at home over the weekend as the Lady Lions picked up their first conference win on the season and added two more victories in the Battle of the Boot Tournament to go 3-0 on the week. Newsome picked up a new career high as she hit for a .516 average in Friday's win over Louisiana-Monroe. She averaged 15 kills per match in the wins over Northwestern State, Louisiana-Monroe, and Louisiana Tech. In sweeping all three matches, she averaged two kills per set on the weekend and hit for better than a .300 average.
 
This is Newsome's second SLC Offensive Player of the Week award this season, having previously earned the award back on September 5th. SLU has won an award each of the four weeks the SLC has named Players of the Week so far in 2022, with Cicily Hidalgo joining Newsome as a winner on the offensive side and Ansley Tullis winning one on the defensive side.
 
Newsome and the rest of the Lady Lions (11-2, 1-0 SLC) head into Southland Conference play for the remainder of the season, starting on Thursday night on the road at Houston Baptist. Opening serve against the Huskies (8-5, 0-0 SLC) is set for 6:30 P.M. at HBU's Sharp Gym.
