HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team rode the hot swinging arm of
Kailin Newsome to its second straight sets win of the weekend as the Lady Lions took down the ULM Warhawks 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-16) Friday evening as part of the Battle for the Boot at the University Center.
Newsome had her second highest kill total on the year, finishing the three-set match against the Warhawks with 19 kills which was only behind her 26-kill performance against St. John's, which took five sets to complete. When combined with just three errors in 31 total attacks, her .516 hitting percentage on the night was her best of the season by far. She also added a service ace and an assist on the offensive side while defensively she contributed seven digs.
Cicily Hidalgo finished the match with nine kills, a block assist, and six digs. Alexis Lobargo added seven kills in 15 attacks.
Peyton Stokley let the team with 22 assists while
Gracie Duplechein added 16 assists. Duplechein also recorded 12 digs, only trailing
Ansley Tullis in the category, who had 14.
Hannah Brewer had two solo blocks and a block assist at the net while
Karlee Wilkerson and
Kibi Huggins both had two block assists in the win.
The Lady Lions hit .310 as a team while holding the Warhawks to just a .196 hitting percentage in the match.
SLU (10-2) looks to close out a perfect Battle for the Boot on Saturday in a midday match-up against Louisiana Tech. Opening serve of the match against the Lady Techsters (6-7) is set for 12:30 P.M. at the University Center.
