HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team closed out its opening week of fall practice Saturday morning at Strawberry Stadium.
 
The Lions, the preseason Southland Conference favorite and one of six FCS teams to be ranked in the final FCS polls in each of the past three seasons, held their final split-squad practice on Saturday. SLU head coach Frank Scelfo has been pleased with his team's efforts through the first four practices.
 
"We saw a lot of growth across the board at every position group," Scelfo said. "We're able to give everyone quality reps by splitting up practice into two sessions during this first week. We had good moments on both sides of the ball throughout the first week. Our defense did a good job creating turnovers, but our offense answered with some big plays."
 
Monday's 9 a.m. practice will mark the first time the 2022 Lions come together as a full team during fall camp.
 
"When we bring everyone together, that's when our team camaraderie develops," Scelfo commented. "We'll start to see how well our guys mesh and play as a unit, as well as which players are prepared to step up from a leadership standpoint."
 
Southeastern will practice Monday through Saturday at 9 a.m. until the first day of fall classes, set for Aug. 17. Starting with the beginning of the fall semester, SLU will practice Monday through Thursday at 3:45 p.m. and Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. until the week of the Sept. 3 season opener at UL Lafayette.
 
Southeastern opens the 2022 season at the Ragin' Cajuns in a 6 p.m. contest. The home opener is set for Sept. 17 versus Central Connecticut State.
