HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team will open the 2022 season Thursday with a 6 p.m. contest at Ole Miss.
Thursday's contest will be televised on SEC Network+. Live stats, provided by the hosts, will be accessible on the soccer schedule page at LionSports.net.
First-year SLU head coach
Nathan Gillespie returns 18 letter winners from last season's roster that advanced to the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament.
Among those returning are the team's top scorers in 2021 in
Mya Guillory (five goals, five assists) and
Makenzie Maher (five goals, one assist), as well as fellow starters
Darby Gillette,
Haylli Roe,
Dalton Fish and
Claire Huston.
Guillory, Gilllette and Huston represented the Lady Lions on the preseason All-Southland teams released earlier this month. Southeastern also added 10 newcomers for the upcoming season.
Southeastern dropped a 4-0 exhibition decision at Mississippi State last Sunday.
Olivia Griffin and
Sophie Wendt split time in goal for SLU, combining for 11 saves in the match.
Thursday will see the Lady Lions take on an Ole Miss squad that finished 12-6-3 overall and 6-3-1 in Southeastern Conference play. The Rebels advanced to the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
Thursday's match is the first of two road matches to open the regular season for SLU. Southeastern will travel to Jackson, Miss. next Friday for a 1 p.m. match at Jackson State.
