SLU’s Hinton, Okafor named to All-Louisiana Team

Lions' Duo of Hinton and Okafor earn LSWA honors

HAMMOND, La. – Gus Okafor and Jalyn Hinton were selected to the 2022 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Team for the Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team, the LSWA announced Wednesday.
 
Hinton, a Boston native, was named to the LSWA third team. The Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Hinton led the league in blocked shots with 81. The second team All-Southland selection also scored 13.8 points and snatched 8.0 rebounds per contest while shooting a league-high 64 percent (167-for-241) from the field. He also had eight double-doubles for the campaign, including a season-high 27 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Northwestern State on March 5.
 
Okafor, out of Baltimore, received honorable mention recognition Wednesday. The Lions' leading scorer averaged 14.6 points per game, recording 20 points or more in eight games. The first team All-Southland selection, Okafor scored a career-high 32 points while snatching 13 rebounds in a road win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 17.
 
Southeastern (19-15, 10-4 Southland) went on to finish the season with the Southland's second seed in the conference tournament before falling in the Southland Conference Tournament Title Game to A&M-Corpus Christi, 72-65.
 
Hinton and Okafor were vital in helping the Lions set a new program high mark in points scored (2,679) and three-pointers made (302).
