No. 3-Ranked Southern Miss Tops SLU, 9-4

HAMMOND, La. – No. 3-ranked Southern Miss scored three runs in both the second and third innings on its way to a 9-4 non-conference win over the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Southeastern (17-24) got on the scoreboard in fourth.

Preston Faulkner led off with a single to left field. He scored on Pierce Leavengood's two-out triple off the center-field wall. Champ Artigues followed with an opposite-field single to plate Leavengood.

The Golden Eagles (33-8), who extended their winning streak to a school-record 15 consecutive games, picked up a run in the fifth before SLU bounced back with two more in the bottom half of the inning.

Rhett Rosevear went the opposite way with a pitch for a one-out single. Tyler Finke followed with his seventh home run of the season. The two-run blast cut the Southern Miss lead to 7-4.

A two-run homer by the Golden Eagle first baseman in the sixth completed the scoring.

Southern Miss starting pitcher Matthew Adams (1-0) earned the win. He allowed two runs in 3.2 innings pitched, surrendering five hits and striking out six batters. Landon Harper, who entered with the bases loaded in the eighth and worked out of the jam, picked up his ninth save of the season. Hunter O'Toole (2-4) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs in 1.2 innings pitched.

Leavengood (2-for-4) turned in a multi-hit performance as all nine Lion hitters in the starting lineup picked up a hit in the game.
