Kiefer, Hinton Headline All-Southland Team For Lions

HAMMOND, La. – Jalyn Hinton earned Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team while SLU head coach David Kiefer was named the conference's coach of the year, the league office announced Monday.

Kiefer, in his third year as Lions' head coach, doubled his career win total as he guided Southeastern (18-13, 10-4 Southland) to a double-bye in the Southland Conference Tournament. Kiefer also led the Lions to the Southland Conference Tip-Off title January 8th and accumulated 11 wins by five points or less. The Lions were also 3-0 against Southland regular season champion Nicholls (21-10, 11-3 Southland) this season. Southeastern also led the league in offense scoring 83.07 points per game during Southland play.

Hinton, out of Boston, led the Southland in blocked shots with 65 as he also earned a spot on the second team Monday. The Florida Southern transfer led the league in field goal percentage as he shot 71.8 percent (84-for-117) from the field. For the season, he shot 65.13 percent from the field which was second in the nation behind Purdue's Zach Edey (66.67 percent). Hinton was also top 10 in the league in scoring (14.1 ppg), rebounding (7.8 rpg) and free throw percentage (77.8).

Hinton and Kiefer were joined by Gus Okafor and Keon Clergeot on the All-Southland Team. Okafor earned first team honors while Clergeot was named to the second team.

Okafor, out of Baltimore, was selected to the league's first team after leading the Lions in scoring, averaging 15.2 points per game. Okafor recorded six double-doubles for the season, including a 32-point, 13 rebound performance against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Okafor was seventh in the league in both scoring and rebounding and was sixth in free throw percentage (79.3).

Okafor was joined on the first team by Southland Player of the Year Nicholls' Ty Gordon, Northwestern State's Kendall Coleman and UNO's Troy Green and Derek St. Hilaire.

Clergeot, the Winter Haven, Florida native, averaged 14.9 points per game during league action. The UMass transfer was nearly flawless at the free throw line during Southland games shooting 62-for-69 (90 percent), third in the league. Clergeot also led the Lions to a win over UIW where he scored a career-high 29 points. The Southland Player of the Week for Jan. 10, Clergeot also dropped 28 points in a victory at home over HBU.

With Clergeot and Hinton on the second team was A&M-Corpus Christi's Isaac Mushila, Nicholls' DeVante Carter and HBU's Darius Lee.

Kiefer, Hinton, Okafor and Clergeot and the Lions will turn their attention now to the Southland Conference Tournament. SLU will play at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas in the semifinals Friday at 7:30 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
