HOMEWOOD, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team succumbed to a late rally Friday by Samford in a 10-4 series-opening loss to the Bulldogs at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Southeastern (8-10) wiped out a 3-0 deficit in the seventh, knocking Samford (8-7) starting pitcher Jacob Cravey out of the game with
Preston Faulkner's third home run of the season. The two-run blast to left-center field pulled the Lions within a run.
Reliever Timmy Watkins walked
Tyler Finke before hitting
Connor Manola with a pitch. After uncorking a wild pitch, the Bulldogs went to the bullpen again. With runners at second and third, Finke scored the tying run on a Brody Westbrooks' wild pitch.
Following a walk to
Champ Artigues, Manola scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Christian Garcia to give SLU the lead.
With the Lions up, 4-3, Samford rallied for six runs in the bottom of the inning off relievers
Daniel Dugas and
Gage Trahan.
The Bulldogs added a run to their lead in the eighth.
Westbrooks (1-0) earned the win, walking two in a scoreless inning of relief. Dugas (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs in one-third of an inning.
