BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team opened up its busiest stretch of the season with a 11-2 loss to No. 20 LSU Tuesday night at Tiger Park.
Southeastern (14-8) was able to manage just four hits off Tiger pitching.
Aeriyl Mass,
Madisen Blackford,
Cam Goodman and
Madison Rayner were the lone Lady Lions to collect hits.
Heather Zumo (9-2) took the loss for Southeastern, giving up four runs (three earned) in two innings against LSU (20-7). Raelin Chaffin (4-0) earned the win in the circle for the Tigers with four shutout innings.
LSU took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Zumo retired the first five batters she faced before Raeleen Gutierrez reached on a two-out error. Gutierrez promptly stole second and scored an unearned run on a Baylea Brandon single to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
Zumo was chased from the game in the bottom of the third. An RBI single by Ciara Briggs was followed by a two-run home run by Taylor Pleasants that brought in
Alyssa Romano for Zumo facing a 4-0 deficit. Romano did not have much more luck, allowing a three-run home run to Brandon to give way to
KK Ladner down, 7-0.
LSU had another big inning in the bottom of the fourth. Three straight Tiger doubles extended the lead to 11-0.
Southeastern avoided the shutout against LSU reliever Taylor Edwards in the top of the fifth inning.
Lindsey Rizzo walked,
Cam Goodman beat out an infield single and Mass walked to load the bases with two outs. Rayner then hit a single into left field to plate Rizzo and Goodman to cut the final margin to 11-2.
Southeastern will continues its road swing Wednesday with a 2:30 p.m. game versus Colgate in Jacksonville, Alabama. Live stats, provided by Jacksonville State, for the neutral site contest will be accessible via the softball schedule page at
