SLU Hosts New Orleans, Nicholls to Close 2021-22 Home Schedule

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team will close out its 2021-22 home schedule this week, hosting a pair of in-state rivals at the University Center.
 
The Lady Lions (12-9, 8-3 Southland) opens the week Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. game versus New Orleans (2-15, 1-9 Southland). SLU welcomes Nicholls (4-17, 2-8 Southland) for a 1 p.m. Saturday matinee in the University Center.
 
Thursday's game will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive.
 
Saturday is Senior Day at the University Center. Prior to the contest, SLU will honor Caitlyn Williams, Morgan Carrier, Breonca Ducksworth, Morgan Davis, Chrissy Brown and Kacey Bradford in a special Senior Day ceremony.
 
Thursday is Alumni Night at the University Center. All former Lady Lions receive free admission and will be recognized at halftime.
 
Carrier will be Thursday's Spotlight Player of the Game and the first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring the New Iberia, Louisiana native courtesy of PRIDE.
 
Thursday will also feature a Cane's Challenge in the UC. If the Lady Lions top 50 points, fans can redeem their student coupon or game ticket at local participating Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers to receive a free combo with the purchase of another of equal or greater value.
 
Southeastern will be looking to snap a three-game losing skid. The Lady Lions dropped a 57-54 decision at UIW Saturday.
 
SLU suffered the loss to the Cardinals despite a dominant effort from Williams. The Brusly, Louisiana native netted a game-high 24 points on 10-for-14 shooting to go with eight rebounds.
 
Taylor Bell chipped in with 10 points off the bench for Southeastern. Natalie Kelly led SLU with nine rebounds and three blocked shots, while Hailey Giaratano paced the squad with four assists.
 
The Lady Lions continue to lead the Southland Conference with a 42.1 field goal percentage and are averaging 62.1 points per contest. Williams leads the team with 9.8 points per game, followed by Carrier (8.0 ppg), Giaratano (7.6 ppg), Davis (7.2 ppg) and Ducksworth (7.1 ppg).
 
Giaratano is second in the Southland with 3.5 assists per contest, while Ducksworth (2.8 apg, 4th) and Cierria Cunningham (2.6 apg, 8th) join her among the conference leaders. The Ponchatoula, Louisiana native is also atop the league with a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio.
 
Southeastern enters the week's action with a plus-5.5 rebounding margin. Williams is third in the Southland with 8.1 boards per contest and is seventh on the program's all-time list with 813 career rebounds.
 
Williams is one of two seniors on the Southeastern career leaderboard. Carrier is third in school history in both career three-point field goals made (163) and attempted (472).
 
The Lady Lion defense has held opponents to a league-low 54.5 points per game. Ducksworth is fifth in the Southland with 1.9 steals per game, while Kelly (14, 8th) and Giaratano (13, 10th) are in the league's top 10 in blocked shots. Williams is third in program history with 91 career blocked shots.
 
Southeastern opens the week versus a New Orleans team that is coming off a 75-64 home loss to McNeese. Jomyra Mathis led the Privateers with a career-high 20 points.
 
Mathis paces the team with 11.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. DeArica Pryor is second on the team in scoring with 11.1 points per game, while she ranks among the Southland leaders in assists (2.6 apg, 6th) and blocked shots (39, 2nd).
UNO holds a 27-25 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools. Southeastern has won the last three games versus the Privateers, including a 72-48 win back on Jan. 20 in New Orleans. Williams and Davis finished with 15 and 10 points, respectively, in the victory over UNO.
 
Nicholls, which plays at Northwestern State on Thursday, will enter the week looking to snap a four-game losing streak. The Colonels' last win was a 47-43 road win at UIW on Feb. 3.
 
Chelsea Cain (15.5 ppg), Chyna Allen (13.2 ppg) and Bryanna Washington (10.8 ppg) are the top scorers for Nicholls. Washington (7.1 rpg, 5th) and Cain (6.6 rpg, 8th) are both among the conference's top rebounders.
 
Southeastern is 61-28 all-time versus the Colonels. Back on Jan. 22 in Thibodaux, SLU earned a 76-58 victory behind double-digit scoring performances by Bell (20 points), Davis (18), Williams (10) and Ducksworth (10).
 
Following this week's action, the Lady Lions will close out the regular season with a 1 p.m. contest at Northwestern State next Saturday in Natchitoches. The game at the Lady Demons can be heard online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive.
