Newsome’s Double-Double Not Enough on Rough Night on Road

Lady Lions Remain One-Game Back of SLC Lead with Two of Last Three at Home

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team got a second straight double-double from Kailin Newsome, but a tough night of errors, both on the serve and attack, doomed the Lady Lions in a 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 23-25, 14-25) loss to the Lamar Cardinals Thursday night at the Montagne Center.

Newsome had an exceptional night on the attack, getting a match-high 15 kills to just four errors on 27 attacks for a .407 attack percentage while also collecting 16 digs for her second straight and 12th double-double on the season. She also collected a service ace, a block assist, and pair of assists, but had a rare rough night on the receiving end of serves, getting tagged with five reception errors on Cardinal service aces.

Cicily Hidalgo had 13 kills to five errors on 35 total attacks for a .229 attack percentage. She also had an ace, a solo block, and an assist, however she was hit with three reception errors. Karlee Wilkerson rounded out the offensive leaders with nine kills. Gracie Duplechein finished the match with 41 assists while Ansley Tullis finished with 15 digs.

Errors were just too numerous in the match for SLU as the Lady Lions committed 26 attack errors, 14 of which went into the Lamar block and came back over for points. The Cardinals also got 18 points off of the serve, 13 service aces with five SLU errors. Southeastern blocked six Lamar attacks back for points, part of just 12 Cardinal attack errors in the match, while the Lady Lions got just seven points off the serve, five aces and two Lamar service errors.

The Lady Lions (20-7, 10-5 SLC) saw its five-match win streak and two-match win streak on the road both snapped, but remained just one game back of the conference lead at the end of the night's action. Southeastern looks to continue its dominance at home on Saturday, trying to earn a split in the season series against Texas A&M-Commerce in a battle of Lions. Opening serve against TAMUC (10-19, 6-9 SLC) is set for 1:00 P.M. in the University Center.
