SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team dropped a 99-62 decision to Utah Sunday night at Jon M. Hunstman Arena.
The loss was the first of the 2022-23 season for Southeastern (2-1). The Pac 12 Conference member Utes (3-0) remain unbeaten on the young season, thanks in large part to 17 three-point field goals.
Much of Southeastern's production came from the bench, as
Daija Harvey led the Lady Lions with 13 points, while
Jaylen Huderson was perfect from the field in a 10-point effort. Freshman
Jalencia Pierre led SLU with six assists.
Taylor Bell was the lone Lady Lion starter in double figures with 11 points. Bell and
Hailey Giaratano shared the team lead with four rebounds apiece.
Utah's 53.1 percentage (17-for-32) from behind the arc fueled a balanced attack. Jenna Johnson led four Utes in double figures with 20 points, as seven different Utah players made at least one three.
"Tonight was a tough one for us." Southeastern head coach
Ayla Guzzardo said. "We missed a lot of shots around the rim that we usually make. They shot the ball very well from the three and pulled away early."
Utah held a 45-25 lead at halftime and would grow its advantage to as much as 39 down the stretch. But the efforts of Harvey, Pierre and Huderson helped SLU finished with a 39-19 advantage in bench points.
"I'm proud of this team's fight." Guzzardo said "We continued to push back and our bench came in with a lot of energy."
Southeastern will close out its West Coast trip Tuesday with an 8 p.m. contest at San Diego State. The game can be heard at
