Callaghan Claims Southland Weekly Honors

SLU freshman kicker receives SLC Special Teams Player of the Week accolades for second time

HAMMOND, La. – After helping the No. 25 Southeastern Louisiana University football team to its fourth straight victory, Lion freshman kicker Riley Callaghan was named the Southland Conference Special Teams Player of Week in an announcement from the league office Monday.

Callaghan earned his second league weekly honor of his freshman season, having previously being named SLC Special Teams Player of the Week Sept. 26. The Lions as a team have received 11 league weekly awards, as Callaghan, Donte' Daniels, Austin Dunlap and Cephus Johnson III have all been recognized twice, while Jack Henderson, CJ Turner and Gage Larvadain have all won once.

Callaghan was 3-for-3 on field goals in SLU's 23-7 win over then-Southland leader Northwestern State, connecting on tries of 46, 39 and 28 yards, while also making both of his PAT's. The victory moved the Lions one win away from winning the Southland Conference championship and earning its third FCS playoff appearance in the past four seasons.

Callaghan has been effective since taking over placekicking duties early in his first collegiate season. The Ashburn, Virginia native has made 12-of-14 field goals and 26-of-27 PAT tries. In just seven games played, Callaghan leads the SLC in made field goals.

SLU will close out the regular season Thursday, traveling to Nicholls for a 6 p.m. Southland matchup in Thibodaux. The 2022 version of the River Bell Classic – marking the 50th anniversary of the start of the rivalry - will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM, The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM).
