HAMMOND, La. – After playing key roles in the Southeastern Louisiana University football team's 28-27 victory at McNeese, sophomore linebacker Donte' Daniels and junior punter Austin Dunlap received Player of the Week honors from both the Southland Conference and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Monday.
 
Daniels was named SLC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, after previously claiming the honor on Sept. 26. Dunlap also claimed his second Special Teams Player of the Week honor from the league office in 2022, having received the award on Sept. 5.
 
Daniels and Dunlap, both natives of Slidell, Louisiana, joined senior quarterback Cephus Johnson III (Sept. 19, Oct. 24) as SLU's multi-time winners of conference weekly honors this fall. Kicker Riley Callaghan (Sept. 26), defensive back Jack Henderson (Sept. 19) and wide receiver CJ Turner (Sept. 26) also won weekly honors earlier this season.
 
Daniels and Dunlap both received the same honors from the LSWA, as they were the top performers in the state this week. The SLU duo represent the first Lions to be recognized with state weekly honors this season.
 
Daniels' interception of McNeese quarterback Walker Wood in the final minute clinched Southeastern's fifth win in its last six games. Daniels shared team-high honors with Henderson with 10 tackles, while also recording one of the Lions' five sacks and helping Southeastern to hold the Cowboys scoreless for the final 22 minutes of the game.
 
In his first year as a full-time starter, Daniels has developed into one of SLU's most productive defensive players. He leads Southeastern with 59 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss this season.
 
Dunlap consistently pinned the Cowboys deep, averaging 47.8 yards per punt in Saturday's win. Two of Dunlap's punts were 50-plus yards and three of his four efforts were downed inside the McNeese 10-yard line.
 
Dunlap's latest performance was another entry on his growing All-American resume. He is currently fifth in the nation with a SLC-best 44.8 punting average. His career punting average of 42.6 ranks him second in program history and fifth among active FCS players.
 
Southeastern will close its road swing with a 3 p.m. SLC contest Saturday at Lamar. The Lions-Cardinals matchup will be televised on ESPN3 and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM, The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM).
