HAMMOND, La. – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana University football team to its first road win of the season, senior quarterback Cephus Johnson III was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week in an announcement from the league office Monday.
 
The weekly honor was the second of the season for the Mobile, Alabama native. Johnson III previously received SLC Offensive Player of the Week accolades Sept. 19 following SLU's 70-6 victory over Central Connecticut State.
 
Johnson III and teammate Eli Sawyer split time under center leading a Southeastern offense that finished with 459 total yards and controlled the ball for over 41 minutes in Saturday's 31-14 road win at Jacksonville State, which is in the midst of a transition to FBS as a future member of Conference USA.
 
In Saturday's win, Johnson III paced the SLU ground attack with 91 yards on 10 carries. He also connected with Jessie Britt and Ivan Drobocky on passing touchdowns. A balanced Lion attack finished with 23 first downs, 259 rushing yards and 200 passing yards in the victory over JSU.
 
Southeastern will continue its three-game road swing with a 7 p.m. Southland Conference contest Saturday at McNeese. The game will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM, The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM).
