Hidalgo’s Return Not Enough to Upend Road Woes

Cicily Hidalgo Notches Seventh Double-Double of Season in Return to Starting Line-Up

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team saw Cicily Hidalgo return to the starting line-up and she got right back into the swing of things by posting a double-double, but it just couldn't overcome issues on the road as the Lady Lions fell to the Incarnate Word Cardinals 3-1 (15-25, 26-24, 22-25, 20-25) Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.

Hidalgo finished with her seventh double-double of the season in her first start since the match at New Orleans, scoring 13 kills and 16 digs to go along with an assisted block. Kailin Newsome led the team in kills with 16 while adding nine digs, a service ace, and a block assist. Gracie Duplechein led the team with 24 assists while Ariana Hebert contributed 22 helpers. Hebert had two aces and six digs while Duplechein had an ace and eight digs. Hannah Brewer had four block assists while Alexis Logarbo, Crispin Adams, and Karlee Wilkerson each had two block assists on the day. Ansley Tullis led the team with 17 digs.

SLU doubled up the Cardinals in points off the serve, scoring eight points eight through service aces or UIW service errors compared to just four points scored similarly by UIW. However, issues on the attack continued to plague the Lady Lions, who committed 30 attack errors in the match compared to 17 by UIW. 11 of those attack errors by SLU were into the Cardinals block, which went down for UIW points while the Cardinals hit six into the Lady Lion block which hit the ground for SLU points.

While falling to 1-6 in true road matches, the Lady Lions (15-6, 5-4 SLC) come back to Hammond looking for some home cooking as SLU plays the next three back on campus where they're currently 7-0 on the season. The first of those matches is this Thursday night against the team SLU defeated on the road, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Lady Lions knocked off TAMUCC in straight sets in Corpus back on September 24th. Opening serve of Thursday's match against the Islanders (7-16, 7-2 SLC) is set for 6:30 P.M. inside the University Center.
