Williams Named Southland Conference Player of the Week

Senior forward has been a key contributor to best-ever 5-0 Southland start for league-leading SLU

HAMMOND, La. – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team to a pair of conference victories, Lady Lion senior forward Caitlyn Williams was named the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week in an announcement from the league office on Monday.

Williams is the first SLU player to earn Southland Player of the Week honors this season and the first since teammate Hailey Giaratano claimed the honor on Feb. 15, 2021. Williams was previously named Louisiana Player of the Week last March.

The Brusly, Louisiana native has been one of many key contributors for the league-leading Lady Lions, who are off to a best-ever 5-0 start to Southland play. In both of this week's games, Williams led SLU in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in Southeastern's league wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UIW.

"This is a very deserving honor for Caitlyn," Lady Lion head coach Ayla Guzzardo said. "She's put in a lot of work and is doing what we've asked of her on both ends of the floor. Caitlyn is our leading rebounder and has been a consistent scorer for us."

Williams tied a career high with 17 rebounds to go with a team-high nine points, as Southeastern grinded out a 48-43 win over TAMU-CC in a battle of Southland co-leaders on Thursday. She backed that up with a 16-point, seven-rebound showing in Saturday's 76-49 victory over UIW.

In her final season in Hammond, Williams shares the team lead with Giaratano with 8.5 points per game and is currently fourth in the Southland with 8.1 rebounds per contest. She ranks among the program's career leaders in rebounds (764, 7th) and blocked shots (87, 3rd).

Williams and the Lady Lions will be back in action on Thursday, traveling to Lake Charles for a 5 p.m. Southland contest at McNeese. The game can be heard online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive. A live video stream (McNeese subscription required) will also be available at www.McNeeseSports.com.
