HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team will hit the road for a pair of Southland Conference contests this week.

The Lady Lions (5-6, 1-0 Southland) will open the trip with a 5 p.m. game at New Orleans (1-7, 0-1 Southland) on Thursday. On Saturday, SLU heads to Nicholls (3-9, 1-0 Southland) for a 1 p.m. league matchup in Thibodaux. Both games will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive.

Southeastern opened up Southland Conference play last Saturday with its most complete effort of the 2021-22 season. The Lady Lions shot 65 percent (39-for-60) – including 76 percent (19-for-25) in the second half - from the floor and forced Northwestern State into 20 turnovers in a 90-56 victory over the Lady Demons.

Chrissy Brown led four SLU players in double figures with 14 points, followed by Morgan Carrier (13), Caitlyn Williams (12) and Breonca Ducksworth (10). Hailey Giaratano and Natalie Kelly added nine points apiece, while Taylor Bell chipped in with eight to fuel Southeastern's highest single-game scoring output versus a Southland Conference opponent since the 2000-01 season.

Cierria Cunningham was the Lady Lions' top facilitator with five assists to her credit, while Ducksworth led the SLU defensive effort with five steals. Williams claimed a game-high eight rebounds and helped Southeastern finish with a 35-23 edge on the glass in Saturday's win.

Southeastern is averaging 62.7 points per game and has a Southland-best 42.0 field-goal percentage heading into this weekend's games. Giaratano leads SLU with 9.4 points per game, followed by Carrier (7.8 ppg), Williams (7.1 ppg), Ducksworth (6.4 ppg) and Morgan Davis (6.2 ppg). Giaratano (3.0 apg, 3rd) and Cunningham (2.8 apg, 5th) both rank among the Southland assist leaders heading into this week's action.

SLU carries a plus-3.6 rebounding margin through 11 games. Williams is fourth in the league with 8.0 rebounds per game and the Brusly, Louisiana native is currently seventh on the program's career list with 730 rebounds.

On the defensive side, opponents are scoring a Southland-low 56.0 points and shooting just 35.9 percent from the floor against the Lady Lions. Ducksworth paces the squad with 18 steals, while Giaratano and Kelly have contributed 11 and eight blocked shots, respectively. Williams' 86 career blocked shots are tied for third in program history.

Southeastern's two opponents this week faced off last Saturday in the Southland Conference opener with Nicholls edging New Orleans, 69-68. Chelsea Cain scored the game-winning basket in the final seconds for the Colonels to highlight a 29-point effort that earned her Southland and Louisiana Player of the Week honors. DeArica Pryor led UNO with 22 points in Saturday's loss.

The Privateers are averaging 50.0 points per game heading into Thursday's game. Brianna Ellis boasts the team's top scoring average at 15.5 points per game, but has not appeared since a Nov. 20 loss to UL Lafayette.

Southeastern is 24-27 all-time versus the Privateers. The Lady Lions swept the season series in 2020-21.

Jomyra Mathis (11.1 ppg) and Pryor (10.1 ppg) are the other top scorers for UNO. Zoe Cooper leads the Privateers with 5.8 rebounds per contest.

Nicholls, which hosts Northwestern State on Thursday, is averaging 59.3 points per contest as a team. Cain tops the team with 16.1 points per game, followed by Chyna Allen (13.8 ppg) and Bryanna Washington (10.8 ppg).

Cain (6.5 rpg) and Washington (6.2 rpg) lead the Colonels on the boards. Deonna Brister has a team-high 23 steals for a Nicholls defense that is yielding 76.9 points per outing.

Southeastern is 59-28 all-time versus the Colonels. Last season, the teams split the season series with each team winning on its respective home court.

Following this week's trip, Southeastern will return home to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in the University Center. The game with the Islanders will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard live online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive.

Kelly and Cunningham will be the Spotlight Players of the Game for the contest versus Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The first 150 fans will receive trading cards featuring the SLU juniors, courtesy of PRIDE.
