NATCHITOCHES, La. – Northwestern State's Olivia Draguicevich scored off a corner kick in the 28
th minute as the Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team lost 1-0 in the Southland Conference opener Friday night at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
Â
The Lady Lions (1-4) had several opportunities in the match, mainly in the second half.
Â
In the 51
st minute,
Darby Gillette played a cross to
Makenzie Maher right in front of the NSU net. However, Maher's shot was saved by NSU keeper Acelya Aydogmus, a first team preseason All-Southland selection and reigning Southland Keeper of the Year.
Â
In the 55
th minute, SLU's
Tilly Deacon took a free kick from 30 yards out that sailed over the outstretched arms of Aydogmus inches above the crossbar.
Â
Southeastern continued its relentless second half pressure as their best opportunity came in the 68
th minute.
Jamie Raines made a nice play to come up with a loose ball in front of the net inside box, but the shot was saved by Aydogmus.
Â
"Tonight just wasn't our night," said fifth-year SLU head coach Chris McBride. "NSU took their chances well and held strong throughout the game. It's early in the season so we will regroup and focus on the next game."
Â
Mya Guillory finished the match with four shots to lead SLU while Raines and
Maycie Massingill each had two.
Â
Friday is the fourth straight year Northwestern State (1-3-2) has defeated SLU by a 1-0 score in the regular season. Â
Â
Despite the loss, SLU outshot NSU 14-5 and finished with eight corner kicks to just two for the Lady Demons. Â
Â
Next up, the Lady Lions will continue their grueling road trip, which began Tuesday, Sept. 1 following the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, Sunday when they take on McNeese at 6 p.m. in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
