HAMMOND, La. – Ten different players scored goals for the Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team in Friday's 11-0 win over Alcorn State in the Lady Lions' home opener, tying a 15-year school record for the largest margin of victory in the program's history.
Â
Southeastern (1-2) outshot ASU (1-1) 32-0 for the match as they stormed out to a 6-0 lead in the first half. SLU's
Mia Milton,
Mya Guillory,
Darby Gillette,
Makenzie Maher,
Jamie Raines and
Hailie Yoder all scored for the Lady Lions in the first 45 minutes as they took the commanding lead into half time.
Â
In the second half, the Lady Lions continued to cash in on opportunities.
Ellie Williams scored her second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 48
th minute. Moments later, Maher scored her second goal of the match on an assist from
Tilly Deacon.
Â
The Lady Lions weren't done as sophomore
Haylli Roe and freshmen
Shamoy Campbell and Deacon each scored their first career goals as SLU cruised to the win.
Â
"After the season opener against Grand Canyon where we really didn't play well," said SLU head coach Chris McBride. "It was nice to put in back-to-back good performances against Arizona State where we played well defensively and then tonight offensively against Alcorn. Now the challenge is to play a complete game, not a perfect game, just a complete game on both ends of the field. We want to be dominant on the defensive side of the ball and ruthless in our attacks so hopefully we can build on that into next week."
Â
The 11-0 margin ties the school record when SLU defeated Alcorn by the same 11-0 score on Sept. 27, 2006.
Â
The biggest improvement McBride wanted from the Lady Lions moving into tonight's game was to see the ball moved from level to level better.
Â
"We worked on that all week in practice," said McBride. "We were very deliberate in practice this week and what we worked on and it translated to the field so that's a positive we can take. But now the challenge is to take a step forward and try to do it a little bit cleaner and quicker. We want to be able to do it under pressure and create opportunities when those things happen."
Â
The Lady Lions were originally scheduled to play at Louisiana Tech Sunday afternoon. However, with the threat of Hurricane Ida on the horizon, the match was postponed to Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. As a result, the Lady Lions will have a week to prepare for their match on Friday, Sept. 6 at UL Lafayette at 6 p.m.
Â
"I think after last year with testing multiple times a week for COVID and the season getting postponed last fall, we will be able to handle a few days off for something like this" said McBride. "We hope everyone stays safe first of all because that's the most important thing. But from a soccer stand point, I don't see this hurting us much to take a few days off."
