Warren Signs Pro Contract with Yankees

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University pitcher Will Warren has signed a professional contract with the New York Yankees, Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline reported last week as the organization wrapped up draft picks from the first 10 rounds of the recent MLB draft.

An eighth-round selection of the Yankees in the recent Major League Baseball Draft, Warren is the 18th Lion drafted in the past eight seasons. The organization has yet to assign him to one of its minor league affiliates.

Warren led the Southeastern staff in wins (7), innings pitched (91.0), strikeouts (95) and opponent batting average (.214) this season on the way to earning All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana honors. He ranked third, second, fourth and fifth in the conference in those same categories, respectively, while also finishing fourth in ERA (2.57).

Twice this past season, Warren was named the Southland's pitcher of the week: April 19 after he set a career-high with 11 strikeouts in a win at Stephen F. Austin, as well as the final week of the regular season following a shutout of Houston Baptist during which he tied his career-high in strikeouts. Warren recorded double-digit strikeout totals five times during the 2021 season, including each of his final three starts.

The fourth-year pitcher from Brandon, Mississippi, finishes his Lion career with a 13-10 career record, four saves and a 3.90 ERA. He allowed only 178 hits in 205.0 career innings pitched, striking out 193 batters.

He becomes the 12th Lion baseball alum active in the professional ranks, joining Drew Avans (Los Angeles-NL), Jared Biddy (Colorado), Jameson Fisher (Chicago-AL), Cody Grosse (Seattle), Josh Green (Arizona), Kyle Keller (Pittsburgh), Wade Miley (Cincinnati), Mac Sceroler (Cincinnati), Tate Scioneaux (Colorado), Bryce Tassin (Detroit), Daniel Wasinger (Kansas City-IND).
