HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament Champion Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team released the 2021 schedule Thursday morning.
Â
The early part of the season will be road-heavy for SLU as seven of their first nine matches are away from the friendly confines of Strawberry Stadium.Â
Â
The Lady Lions (8-3-4 in 2020), under reigning Southland and LSWA Coach of the Year Chris McBride, will play six non-conference matches with four of them being on the road. SLU will open the season against Grand Canyon University Thursday, Aug. 19 at 9 p.m. CT in Phoenix, Arizona. Southeastern will then travel to Tempe, Arizona to take on Arizona State Sunday, Aug. 22 at 9 p.m. CT.
Â
SLU's home opener is slated for Friday, Aug. 27 when they host Alcorn State at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. Following the home premiere, the Lady Lions will take to the road once again to face Louisiana Tech Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m.
Â
Southeastern will play two final non-conferences matches the following week on the road against UL Lafayette Friday, Sept. 3 before wrapping up their non-conference slate with a home match against Little Rock Sunday, Sept. 5.
Â
With the departure of Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, Central Arkansas, Lamar and Abilene Christian from the Southland, the Lady Lions will play 12 conference matches this year.
Â
Southeastern will play home-and-home contests with Northwestern State, McNeese, Houston Baptist, UIW, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls.
"It's great to get our schedule full again," said McBride. "We are excited about playing some very challenging non-conference games. Once we get into conference play this year we will play everyone home and away which is even more excited based on how tight the Southland conference is."
Â
The 2021 Southland Soccer Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 3-Saturday Nov. 7 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
