HAMMOND, La. – Three Southeastern Louisiana baseball student-athletes earned a spot on the Southland Conference All-Academic teams released Tuesday by the league office.
Shortstop
Evan Keller and right-handed pitcher
Will Warren were named to the first team. Center fielder
Tyler Finke was named to the second team.
Warren, an automatic selection after having picked up first team All-Conference honors, led the Southeastern staff in wins (7), innings pitched (91.0), strikeouts (95) and opponent batting average (.214). A junior from Brandon, Mississippi, he ranked third, second, fourth and fifth in the conference in those same categories, respectively, while also finishing fourth in ERA (2.57).
Twice Warren was named the Southland's pitcher of the week: April 19 after he set a career-high with 11 strikeouts in a win at Stephen F. Austin, as well as the final week of the regular season following a shutout of Houston Baptist during which he tied his career-high in strikeouts. Warren recorded double-digit strikeout totals five times during the 2021 season.
With a 3.40 cumulative GPA in kinesiology, this marks the second time Warren has earned All-Academic honors.
Keller, the Lions' primary leadoff hitter this season, reached base in a team-high 39 consecutive games from a non-conference contest against Tulane (March 3) through the first game of a May 14 doubleheader at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
He finished the season hitting .314 with a team-high 15 doubles and 47 runs scored. His 19 stolen bases rank third in the Southland. He also ranks sixth in on-base percentage (.422), eighth in doubles and ninth in runs scored, earning second team All-Conference honors.
The junior from Destrehan, Louisiana has compiled a 3.82 GPA in chemistry at Southeastern.
Finke led Southeastern with a .318 batting average this season and his 19 stolen bases rank third in the Southland. He also ranks eighth in on-base percentage (.412), 11th in slugging percentage (.494) and 12th in batting average.
Slowed by a nagging injury for the first month of the season, Finke turned it on after returning to the lineup on a full-time basis. Since returning March 19 at Incarnate Word, he picked up all of his extra-base hits and all but two of his stolen bases.
The sophomore from Columbus, Indiana has compiled a 3.04 GPA in sport management during his time at Southeastern.
Abilene Christian, McNeese and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi led the way with four selections apiece, followed by Central Arkansas and Southeastern with three each. UIW, Lamar, New Orleans and Sam Houston each placed two on the teams, and Nicholls and Northwestern State each have one honoree.
Southland All-Academic teams are voted on by the head coach, sports information director and an academic staff member from each member school. Student-athletes must possess a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA and have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify. Nominees who were on the all-conference first team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the Student-Athlete of the Year. Student-Athlete of the Year candidates must have earned at least a 3.20 GPA and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
