Game Recap: Baseball |

Warren, Lions Cruise to Run-Rule Victory in Series Opener

HAMMOND, La. – Will Warren allowed just two base runners Thursday on his way to shutting out Houston Baptist, 10-0, as Southeastern Louisiana defeated the Huskies in eight innings at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The run-rule victory over HBU (12-37, 9-26 SLC) pushed Southeastern (29-20, 21-15 SLC) into third place in the Southland Conference standings with 64 points, bypassing idle Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (62 points). The Lions trail Abilene Christian (71 points) and New Orleans (69).

Southeastern staked the right-hander to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Bryce Grizzaffi led off with a double inside the third-base bag. A throwing error by the catcher on a Nick Ray bunt allowed Grizzaffi to score, with Ray winding up a third. Ray scored on a wild pitch to the next batter.

Warren (7-2) retired the first 11 batters he faced before coughing up a single to right field. He proceeded to strike out the next batter to end the inning. A leadoff single in the fifth was erased on a pickoff, leading another string of 11 consecutive batters retired to close out the game. He faced one batter over the minimum in the game.

The native of Brandon, Mississippi surrendered a pair of singles and did not walk a batter. He also tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts.

A two-out walk by Evan Keller started a fifth-inning rally. After stealing second base, Keller scored on Tyler Finke's single to center field. Following a Finke steal, Preston Faulkner launched the ball out of the ballpark to left field for his seventh home run of the season.

The Lions scored five in the eighth inning against the HBU bullpen to finish off the game. Grizzaffi launched a two-run homer, his second of the season, to highlight the rally and Finke delivered the final run on a single up the middle.

Warren earned the win while Huskies' starting pitcher Jacob Coats (3-8) suffered the loss. Coats allowed five runs – four earned – in seven innings of work.

Faulkner (2-for-4), Finke (2-for-5) and Grizzaffi (2-for-4) each picked up a pair of hits in the game.
