Southeastern Earns 8-0 Shutout Win Over Southern

Lady Lions improve to 26-16 overall with mercy rule victory

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana scored in every inning and three Lady Lion pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout in an 8-0 mercy-rule victory over Southern in nonconference softball action Tuesday night at North Oak Park.

The Lady Lions (26-16) won their second straight non-conference game in short order with the five-inning victory. Southern fell to 10-21 overall with the loss.

Alyssa Romano (1-0), Karlee Kraft and Ellie DuBois combined to hold the visitors scoreless, as Romano earned her first collegiate victory in the circle. Aeriyl Mass and Lindsey Rizzo led SLU offensively with two hits apiece.

Mass drove in a pair of runs, while Madisen Blackford, Kelci Bodin, Madison Watson and Lexi Johnson each were credited with an RBI. Rizzo paced SLU with two runs scored, while Mass, Blackford, Bodin, Anna Rodenberg, Cameron Beal and Audrey Greely all scored runs.

Southeastern scored all the runs it would need off Southern starter Kaytlin Donaldson (4-10) in the bottom of the first inning. Rizzo singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Blackford. A Lady Jaguar error allowed Blackford to score and give SLU a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Lions padded their advantage in the bottom of the second inning. Beal walked and Greely singled to lead off the frame, then Mass cleared the bases with a two-run double. A throwing error by Southern scored Mass and put SLU ahead, 5-0.

RBI singles by Watson and Johnson gave SLU a 7-0 lead after three innings. Southern mounted its biggest threat in the top of the fourth, loading the bases versus Kraft. Kraft, who was making her first appearance in the circle of 2021, retired Kameryn Adkins to get out of the inning.

Rizzo singled, stole a pair of bases and scored on a Bodin groundout to close out SLU's scoring in the bottom of the fourth. DuBois struck out a pair in a 1-2-3 fifth to close out the run-rule win.
