BEAUMONT, Texas – One final hurdle remains for the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team in their quest for conference supremacy as they take on seventh-seeded Sam Houston in the 2020 Southland Conference Tournament Championship Game Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Lamar Soccer Complex.

SLU and Sam Houston will meet in the title game for the second time in six years as the Lady Lions defeated the Bearkats in the 2015 Southland Tournament Championship in penalty kicks, 3-1, in Conway, Arkansas. Southeastern leads the all-time series over Sam Houston, 9-7-4.

The Lady Lions (7-2-4) advanced to the title game after wins over fourth-seeded Northwestern State in the quarterfinals in a penalty kick shootout and top-seeded Stephen F. Austin by a 2-0 score in the semifinals.

Southeastern and Sam Houston (7-5-1) faced off on March 5 in Hammond, Louisiana with the match ending in a 0-0 tie. The Lady Lions outshot the Bearkats, 18-6, but were unable to cash in on six shots on goal.

"That was a good ball game that both teams played really well for 110 minutes," said SLU head coach Chris McBride. "We were really just learning our offensive sets and learning the best ways to communicate defensively which has helped us become a more cohesive unit as the season went on."

Sam Houston played their way into the championship game with some late game heroics. The Bearkats trailed second-seeded Lamar, 3-1, with under four minutes remaining in regulation in Tuesday's quarterfinal round. Sam Houston scored twice, including the game-tying goal by Brooke Jones, a second team All-Southland selection, with just 23 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. The Bearkats then cashed in on a golden goal in the first overtime by Courtney Pawlik for the remarkable come-from-behind win.

"Sam Houston has been very resilient all year long," said McBride. "We know we're going to have our hands full with them based on the first game we played them and how well they've played this week. It's going to be an extremely competitive game from start to finish."

On Thursday, the Bearkats defeated third-ranked Abilene Christian in the semifinals, 1-0, on a goal by Grace Stine in the 53rd minute to secure their date with SLU in the title game.

Fans can follow Saturday's match as the game will be broadcast on ESPN+. Live video and stat links are available at the Southeastern Soccer schedule page at LionSports.Net.
