Â
BEAUMONT, Texas – Following Tuesday's thrilling victory over Northwestern State in penalty kicks, the fifth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team will take on top-seeded Stephen F. Austin in the 2020 Southland Conference Tournament semifinals Thursday at 4 p.m. at Lamar Soccer Complex.
Â
The Lady Lions (6-2-4), under fourth-year head coach Chris McBride, enter the semifinals on a nine-match unbeaten streak (5-0-4), the longest in the 25-year history of the program.
Â
Southeastern will look to ride the momentum provided by senior goalkeeper
Nadine Maher from Tuesday's win. The Dublin, Ireland native outdueled Southland Conference Keeper of the Year, Northwestern State's Acelya Aydogmus, in penalty kicks. Maher stopped three shots during the PKs including the game winner.
Â
While Maher was the hero Tuesday, the entire SLU defense has been spectacular this year. Southeastern has allowed just three goals during their nine-match unbeaten streak including six shutouts.
Â
SFA (10-5-3), the Southland regular season champions, advanced to the semifinals after defeating eighth-ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in penalty kicks (4-2) Tuesday in the opening round. The Lumberjacks enter Thursday's match with SLU on a five-game unbeaten streak.
Â
Stephen F. Austin is led by first team All-Southland midfielder/forward Katelyn Termini. The senior was second in the conference during league play with five assists.
Â
"Termini has moved to forward and that's really changed their dynamic," said SLU head coach Chris McBride. "It's definitely going to present some different challenges to us defensively."
Â
Thursday will be the second meeting between the Lady Lions and Lumberjacks. SLU defeated SFA, 2-1, in double overtime when
Jamie Raines scored in the 106
th minute on an assist from
Ellie Williams.
Â
"Our energy in the first match with them was great," said McBride. "Hopefully we can come out with that same passion and have everyone on the team have that same kind of energy for 90 minutes we had against them the first time.
Â
The two teams have played 42 matches all-time with SFA leading the series 20-12-9. The Lady Lions and Lumberjacks also met in the 2015 Southland Conference Tournament semifinals with SLU winning, 1-0.
Â
