Lady Lions Score Twice in First Half in 2-0 Shutout of HBU

SLU Runs Unbeaten Streak to Six with Win over Huskies

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – Makenzie Maher and Hitomi Konno both scored goals in the first half to aid the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout over Houston Baptist Thursday night at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lady Lions (4-2-3 Southland) scored their first goal in the 19th minute. Jamie Raines got off a shot from 15 yards out that hit the post and deflected to Maher who knocked the rebound into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

Late in the first half, Konno made a terrific one-on-one move to get open as she drilled the left foot shoot past HBU goalkeeper Karla Ramirez in the 43rd minute.

SLU outshot HBU, 8-2, in the first half as the Lady Lions' defense continued their dominance from last weekend.

In the second half, the Huskies began to put more pressure on Southeastern as they managed seven shots with five on goal. However, SLU's Nadine Maher recorded five saves in the half, six for the match, to help the Lady Lions keep the shutout intact as Southeastern ran their unbeaten streak to six.

"I think we've done a good job of progressing game-to-game," said fourth-year SLU head coach Chris McBride. "And we knew tonight we would have to come out and start off strong. We wanted to make sure the tempo was high and I thought we did that in the first 45 minutes. But in the second half I thought we came out a little flat and that could be that we got a little tired from that long road trip last weekend. But we managed to do a good job defensively in that second half to keep the shut out."

The Huskies (2-10-1, 2-7-0 Southland) were led by Noor Abukishk with four shots, including three on goal while Ryan Ford added three shots and two on goal.

The Lady Lions were led by sophomore Mya Guillory with four shots, two on goal to pace the Southeastern offense.

SLU outshout HBU 13-9 for the match as the Lady Lions' defense has now gone 396:13 without allowing a goal.

Next up, the Lady Lions will be back at home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-7-2, 3-4-1 Southland) Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
