HAMMOND, La. – After helping No. 23 Southeastern Louisiana to a 25-20 victory over McNeese, Lion junior defensive back
Ferlando Jordan and junior kicker
Mateo Rengifo were among the Hercules Tires Southland Conference Football Players of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Jordan, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, was named the Southland Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in his Lion career. Rengifo, a Lawrenceville, Georgia product in his first season in Hammond, was named the league's Special Teams Player of the Week.
Jordan accounted for two of the SLU's opportunistic defense's four turnovers forced in the win over the Cowboys. The preseason All-American intercepted Cody Orgeron late in the first quarter at the SLU 10-yard line.
On the final drive of the game, Jordan forced an Orgeron fumble that his fellow All-Southland teammate
Alexis Ramos recovered at the Lion four-yard line. Southeastern's offense was able to run out the clock from there to preserve the victory.
In his Strawberry Stadium debut, Rengifo was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts and also made one of two point after tries, as his attempt at the end of the first half was blocked. Through his first two games as a Lion, Rengifo is 5-for-5 on field goal tries and has made six of his seven PAT attempts.
